عَسَى — The Verb of Hope and Fear
عَسَى is a fiʿl jāmid (frozen verb) — it has no muḍāriʿ and no amr. It conveys hope (tarājī) or fear/concern (ishfāq) depending on context, making it similar in meaning to لَعَلَّ.
عَسَى is nāqiṣ in two senses: 1. Ṣarf: weak third radical (ع-س-ي) 2. Naḥw: takes ism + khabar (like kāna) rather than a fāʿil
عَسَى as Nāqiṣ — Ism and Khabar
When عَسَى is a nāqiṣ verb (grammatical sense):
| Element | Case | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ism of عَسَى | Marfūʿ | The subject of the hoped/feared event |
| Khabar of عَسَى | Manṣūb (within the maṣdar muʾawwal) | ALWAYS a maṣdar muʾawwal (أَن + muḍāriʿ) |
Khabar of عَسَى Is Always Maṣdar Muʾawwal
Unlike كَانَ (whose khabar can be any word or phrase), عَسَى's khabar is always أَن + verb. This is its unique grammatical constraint.
عَسَى اللَّهُ أَن يَغفِرَ لَهُم - اللَّهُ = ism, marfūʿ - أَن يَغفِرَ = khabar (maṣdar muʾawwal)
Pronouns as the Ism
When a pronoun is the ism, it attaches to عَسَى:
عَسَيتُ أَن أُسَافِرَ — "It is hoped that I will travel" - ت = ism (1st person), fī maḥalli rafʿ - أَن أُسَافِرَ = khabar
عَسَى as Tāmm — Fāʿil Instead of Ism + Khabar
Sometimes عَسَى functions as a tāmm (complete) verb with a fāʿil: - The fāʿil is always a maṣdar muʾawwal
عَسَى أَن تَكرَهُوا شَيئًا وَهُوَ خَيرٌ لَّكُم (Al-Baqarah 2:216) - عَسَى = tāmm - أَن تَكرَهُوا = fāʿil (maṣdar muʾawwal, fī maḥalli rafʿ)
How to Distinguish Tāmm from Nāqiṣ
| What follows عَسَى | Analysis |
|---|---|
| Maṣdar muʾawwal directly (nothing between) | Tāmm — the maṣdar is the fāʿil |
| Noun/pronoun, then maṣdar muʾawwal | Nāqiṣ — noun/pronoun = ism; maṣdar = khabar |
| Sentence | Type | Why |
|---|---|---|
| عَسَى أَن يَنجَحَ | Tāmm | Maṣdar directly follows |
| عَسَى اللَّهُ أَن يَغفِرَ | Nāqiṣ | اللَّه between عَسَى and maṣdar |
| عَسَيتُ أَن أَنجَحَ | Nāqiṣ | Pronoun ت between عَسَى and maṣdar |
