Al-Ghayb (الغَيْب) — The Unseen

Definition
الغَيْب is the opposite of الشَّهَادَة (the witnessed/present). It includes everything that is beyond human perception, comprehension, or verification — not just the supernatural, but anything whose true nature cannot be directly known.
Examples of ghayb: - The nature of Jannah and Jahannam - The affairs and nature of the angels - What lies in the depths of the heavens and earth - What is in another person's heart - The Day of Judgement and its events
The Closing Verse of Surah Al-Hujuraat
Surah Al-Hujuraat 49:18
إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ غَيْبَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ ۚ وَاللَّهُ بَصِيرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ
"Indeed, Allah knows the unseen of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is All-Seeing of what you do."
This verse is the perfect seal for Surah Al-Hujuraat because all of the sūrah's commands relate to the internal life: - Taqwā — in the heart - Imān — in the heart - Verifying news — an internal discipline - Not mocking others — can happen silently - Not backbiting — the victim may never know - Avoiding bad assumptions — entirely internal
None of these can be monitored by other humans. The reminder that Allah sees what even people's closest companions cannot see gives the commands their full weight.
The Obligation of Restraint
We are discouraged from speculating about matters of ghayb — the exact nature of Jannah, the ʿArsh, the rūḥ, how angels appear, etc. The reason: such speculation yields no actionable benefit and risks error about things only Allah knows.
Surah Al-Kahf — People of the Cave
Allah mentions differing opinions about the number of the youth in the cave, then does not disclose the correct number: "Only Allah knows how many they were."
The lesson: their number is irrelevant. What is relevant is how they stood firm in faith — and that is precisely what Allah preserved for us.
