حَتَّى — Three Grammatical Types
حَتَّى is one of the most versatile particles in Arabic. It has three grammatical functions and two semantic meanings, which can occur independently.
Three Grammatical Types

How to Identify the Type
- Following word is majrūr or muḍāriʿ manṣūb → جَارَّة
- Following word matches the ʾiʿrāb of what precedes → عَاطِفَة
- Following word is independent (mādī, or full sentence) → اِبتِدَائِيَّة
حَتَّى الجَارَّة — Inclusivity (الغَايَة)
When حَتَّى governs a noun (majrūr), it marks the furthest limit reached and includes it — unlike إِلَى which is exclusive.

Sūrat al-Qadr
سَلَامٌ هِيَ حَتَّى مَطلَعِ الفَجرِ — It is peace until the break of dawn — the dawning moment is included in the night of peace.
When a muḍāriʿ follows حَتَّى الجَارَّة, it becomes manṣūb via a hidden أَن. The Basrans say أَن is the nāṣib; the Kūfans say حَتَّى itself is the nāṣib.
Sūrat al-Baqara (2:214)
حَتَّى يَقُولَ الرَّسُولُ — the manṣūb يَقُولَ follows the jārrā حَتَّى.
حَتَّى العَاطِفَة — "Even"
When حَتَّى is a conjunction, the following word matches the case of what precedes it. The meaning is emphatic: even (the extreme case).
Eating the fish
- أَكَلتُ السَّمَكَةَ حَتَّى رَأسَهَا (majrūr) = I ate the fish up to its head (jārrā)
- أَكَلتُ السَّمَكَةَ حَتَّى رَأسُهَا (murfūʿ) = I ate the fish, even its head (ʿāṭifa)
All people die
النَّاسُ يَمُوتُونَ حَتَّى الأَنبِيَاءُ — People die, even the prophets — الأَنبِيَاء is murfūʿ because the preceding subject is murfūʿ.
حَتَّى الاِبتِدَائِيَّة — Fresh Start
When حَتَّى starts a new sentence, it has no grammatical effect. The meaning is still broadly "until/so that," but the following clause is syntactically independent.
Sūrat al-Aʿrāf (7:95)
حَتَّى عَفَوا — عَفَوا is mādī, not manṣūb → حَتَّى here is ibtidāʾiyya, starting a new result clause.
The Two Semantic Meanings
Regardless of grammatical type, حَتَّى can mean:
