إِذَا الفُجَائِيَّة — The Surprise إِذَا
إِذَا الفُجَائِيَّة (fujaʾiyyah = of sudden surprise) is a special use of إِذَا that does not express time ("when") — it expresses sudden unexpectedness or astonishment at a result.
Core Meaning
Translate as: "and suddenly…" / "and surprisingly…" / "and lo and behold…"
The particle signals that what follows is startling, unexpected, or remarkable — often introducing the contrast between a humble origin and an astonishing outcome.
Quranic Example
خَلَقَكُم مِن تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ إِذَا أَنتُم بَشَرٌ تَنتَشِرُون "He created you from dust, and then — surprisingly — you are human beings, spreading everywhere!" (Sūrat al-Rūm 30:20)
The surprise: from a handful of dry dust, billions of diverse, scattered human beings. The إِذَا draws the reader's attention to the sheer wonder of the transformation.
Grammatical Parsing
- إِذَا الفُجَائِيَّة is a ḥarf (particle), not a temporal ẓarf.
- It is followed by a jumlah ismiyyah (nominal sentence): أَنتُم بَشَرٌ in the example above.
- It does not cause jazm (unlike the conditional إِذَا/إِن).
- It does not govern the verb tense.
Contrast with temporal إِذَا
| Type | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Temporal | إِذَا جَاءَ النَّصرُ | "When victory comes" — a future condition |
| Surprise (fujaʾiyyah) | ثُمَّ إِذَا أَنتُم بَشَرٌ | "And — surprisingly — you are human beings!" |
