اسم المصدر — The Nominal Maṣdar (Ism al-Maṣdar)
Ism al-maṣdar (اسم المصدر) is a shorter alternative form of the maṣdar that differs from the full maṣdar in two ways:
- It is shorter (fewer letters — typically the prefix letters of the full maṣdar are absent)
- It can mean both the process AND the result/object of the action
Comparison with Full Maṣdar
| Full Maṣdar | Meaning | Ism al-Maṣdar | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| تَأذِين | The act of calling (to prayer) | أَذَان | The call itself OR the act |
| تَكَلُّم | The act of speaking | كَلَام | The speech OR the act |
| تَوَضُّؤ | The act of ablution | وُضُوء | The state/act of wudhu |
| اِعتِبَار | The act of drawing a lesson | عِبرَة | The lesson itself OR the act |
| اِمتِحَان | The act of testing | مِحنَة | The trial/ordeal itself |
Key Difference from Maṣdar

The ism al-maṣdar can express both the action and the resulting noun (the thing produced by the action).
- تَكلُّم = only the act of talking
- كَلَام = the act of talking OR the speech that was produced
