Quranic Occurrence
أَعرَاب (the Bedouins) — a collective genus noun for the desert-dwelling Arab tribes. It refers to the group as a whole:
قَالَتِ الأَعرَابُ آمَنَّا (Al-Ḥujurāt 49:14) — "The Bedouins (aʿrāb) said: We believe."
Singular: أَعرَابِيّ (one Bedouin).
Modern Shifts
The word شَعب has developed modern connotations beyond its Quranic meaning: - Quranic: شَعب (pl. شُعُوب) = a large group, a people/nation - Modern: often implies "ordinary/common people" (populist sense) - شَعبِيَّة as an adjective = popular/populist; as a noun = popularity
