اسم الجِنس الجَمعِي — The Collective Genus Noun

Ism al-jins al-jamʿī (اسم الجنس الجمعي) is a noun that refers to an entire genus or category collectively as a single concept — without counting individual members. It is the name for the whole type of thing at once.

Two Methods to Make the Singular

Quranic Occurrence

أَعرَاب (the Bedouins) — a collective genus noun for the desert-dwelling Arab tribes. It refers to the group as a whole:

قَالَتِ الأَعرَابُ آمَنَّا (Al-Ḥujurāt 49:14) — "The Bedouins (aʿrāb) said: We believe."

Singular: أَعرَابِيّ (one Bedouin).


Modern Shifts

The word شَعب has developed modern connotations beyond its Quranic meaning: - Quranic: شَعب (pl. شُعُوب) = a large group, a people/nation - Modern: often implies "ordinary/common people" (populist sense) - شَعبِيَّة as an adjective = popular/populist; as a noun = popularity
