لَعَلَّ — The Particle of Hope and Fear

لَعَلَّ is one of the حُرُوف المُشَبَّهَة بِالفِعل (ḥurūf al-mushabbaha bil-fiʿl — letters resembling a verb), the family that includes إِنَّ and its sisters. Like إِنَّ, it makes the following noun manṣūb (as its ism) and the predicate marfūʿ (as its khabar).

Structure

لَعَلَّ + [ism, manṣūb] + [khabar, marfūʿ / jumlah fiʿliyya]

Example:

لَعَلَّكُم تُرحَمُون - كُم = ism of لَعَلَّ (attached pronoun, fī maḥalli naṣb) - تُرحَمُون = khabar (jumlah fiʿliyya, fī maḥalli rafʿ)

Meaning: Hope and Fear

لَعَلَّ expresses possibility — either hopeful or cautious, depending on context:

Context Meaning Example
Hope Perhaps (with optimism/desire) لَعَلَّكُم تُرحَمُون — perhaps you will be blessed with mercy
Fear/Caution Perhaps (with concern/warning) perhaps they are better than you (when mocking others)

Contrast with إِنَّ Sisters

لَعَلَّ takes ism + khabar like إِنَّ, but: - إِنَّ = certainty/emphasis - كَأَنَّ = comparison ("as if") - لَكِنَّ = contrast ("but/however") - لَعَلَّ = possibility (hope or fear)

عَسَى (ʿasā) is a fiʿl jāmid (frozen verb) with a similar meaning of "perhaps/maybe" conveying hope or concern. Like لَعَلَّ, it is followed by أَن + muḍāriʿ to form a maṣdar muʾawwal.

عَسَىٰ أَن يَكُونُوا خَيرًا مِّنهُم (Al-Ḥujurāt 49:11) "Perhaps they are better than them."

Examples from the Quran
