لَوْلَا — Counterfactual "But For"

لَوْلَا = "but for" / "if it were not for" — a particle presenting something that IS present, whose presence prevents another thing from happening.

Structure

لَوْلَا + مُبتَدَأ (+ omitted khabar = مَوجُود)
        + جَوَاب
Element Rule
Mubtadaʾ after لَوْلَا Always marfūʿ
Khabar of the mubtadaʾ Omitted (understood as مَوجُودٌ / مَوجُودَةٌ)
Jawāb (affirmative) Begins with لَـ
Jawāb (negative) No لَـ prefix

Examples

لَولَا المَاءُ لَمَاتَ النَّاسُ "But for the water, the people would have died."

Analysis: - المَاءُ = mubtadaʾ (marfūʿ) - Khabar = مَوجُودٌ (omitted — understood) - لَمَاتَ = jawāb al-lola (affirmative → starts with لَـ)

لَولَا هَذَا الكِتَابُ مَا تَعَلَّمتُ العَرَبِيَّة "But for this book, I would not have learned Arabic." - Negative jawāb → no لَـ

Quranic Example

وَلَولَا دَفعُ اللهِ النَّاسَ بَعضَهُم بِبَعضٍ لَفَسَدَتِ الأَرضُ "And if it were not for Allāh's repelling of some people by others, the Earth would surely have been corrupted." (Al-Baqarah 2:251)

  • دَفعُ اللهِ = mubtadaʾ (maṣdar as mubtadaʾ); khabar = مَوجُودٌ (omitted)
  • النَّاسَ = mafʿūl bih of the maṣdar دَفع
  • لَفَسَدَتِ = jawāb al-lola (affirmative → starts with لَـ)
