مِن الزِّيَادَة — The Extra مِن
مِن الزِّيَادَة ("extra مِن") is a مِن that is grammatically redundant — removing it leaves the sentence correct. However, its presence adds semantic emphasis (total comprehensiveness or reinforced negation). It is not extra in meaning, only in grammar.
Two Conditions
Both must be met:
- Before the مِن: negation (مَا/لَا/لَم), prohibition (لَا النَّاهِيَة), or interrogation with هَل (not أَ)
- The noun governed by مِن must be indefinite (نَكِرَة)
Grammatical Analysis
The noun after the extra مِن is: - Grammatically: majrūr (governed by مِن) - In place (maḥallan): whatever it would have been without مِن

Quranic Examples
Fāʿil position
مَا يَخفَى عَلَى اللهِ مِن شَيءٍ (Ibrāhīm) — nothing whatsoever is hidden from Allah — شَيء is majrūr but maḥallan murfūʿ as fāʿil.
Mafʿūl position
هَل تُحِسُّ مِنهُم مِن أَحَدٍ (Maryam) — Do you sense from them anyone at all? — أَحَد is majrūr but maḥallan manṣūb as mafʿūl.
Khabar position (Sūrat Qāf 50:30)
هَل مِن مَزِيدٍ — Are there any more? (Jahannam's cry) — مَزِيد is majrūr but maḥallan murfūʿ as khabar.
Important Note
The terminology "extra" (زائدة) is purely grammatical — it never means the word is unnecessary or redundant in meaning. The Quran contains no unnecessary word. When grammarians say a particle is زائدة, they mean only that syntactically, removing it preserves grammatical correctness. The semantic contribution remains.
