نَائِب عن الظَّرف — Elements that Deputize for a Zarf

A ظَرف (adverb of time or place) is normally a منصوب noun that answers when? or where?. Three categories of words can take the grammatical position of a zarf — they are said to be نَائِبًا عن الظَّرف (deputizing for the zarf). When this happens, the original zarf is pushed into the role of بَدَل (grammatical substitute/appositive) for the deputizing element.

1. Demonstratives Deputizing

When a demonstrative pronoun (هَذَا، تِلكَ، ذَلِكَ, etc.) appears where a zarf would normally sit, it takes the zarf's role:

مَشغُولٌ هَذَا الْيَومَ — busy today

Analysis: - الْيَومَ would normally be the ظَرف - هَذَا pushes يومَ out and takes the zarf position - Since هَذَا is مبني (invariable), we cannot assign it a case vowel — instead, we say it is deputizing for the zarf - الْيَومَ becomes the بَدَل for هَذَا (and therefore منصوب)

Sentence Deputizing element بَدَل
أَيْنَ تَذهَبُ هَذَا المَسَاءَ هَذَا المَسَاءَ
كُنَّا فِي مَكَّةَ ذَلِكَ الْيَومَ ذَلِكَ الْيَومَ
يَجِبُ أَن تَتَّصِلَ بِهِ هَذِهِ الدَّقِيقَةَ هَذِهِ الدَّقِيقَةَ

2. Numbers Deputizing

A number can occupy the zarf position, with the time unit becoming its مُضَاف إليه:

بَقِيتُ فِي الرِّيَاضِ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ — I stayed in Riyadh for three days.

Analysis: - ثَلَاثَة = deputizing for the zarf (منصوب because it stands in the zarf position) - أَيَّامٍ = مُضَاف إليه of ثَلَاثَة

Sentence Number (deputizing) Unit (muḍāf ilayhi)
انتَظَرتُهُ عَشرَ دَقَائِقَ عَشرَ دَقَائِقَ
مَكَثَ هُنَاكَ خَمسَ سَنَواتٍ خَمسَ سَنَواتٍ

3. كَم (How Many) Deputizing

كَم is a كِنَايَة (allusion) about a number — it references a quantity without naming it. As a questioning word, كَم must move to the start of the sentence, but it still functions as the deputizing zarf:

كَم سَاعَةً مَكَثتَ فِي المَطَار؟ — How many hours did you stay in the airport?

Analysis: - كَم = deputizing for the zarf (has moved to sentence-start as a question word) - سَاعَةً = بَدَل for كَم (منصوب) - مَكَثتَ = فعل، فاعل مستتر (أنت)

Sentence type with كَم

Even though كَم is at the start, the sentence structure (جملة فعلية or اسمية) is determined by what follows, not by كَم itself.

Why This Matters

Understanding what is deputizing vs. what is the original zarf prevents analysis errors. For example:

  • In كَم سَاعَةً... — سَاعَةً is منصوب not because it is a direct zarf, but because it is a بَدَل for كَم which is the deputizing zarf
  • In هَذَا اليومَ — the case on اليومَ comes from being a بَدَل, not from being a direct زرف
