Root ب-ل-ي / ب-ل-و (Balā) — Wearing Out and Testing
بَلِيَ / يَبْلَى means to wear out; بَلَا / يَبْلُو means to test. Because some give the root as ب-ل-و and others as ب-ل-ي, most dictionaries group the two words under one entry — and the link between them is illuminating.
The Two Verbs
| Verb | Meaning | Derivative |
|---|---|---|
| بَلِيَ / يَبْلَى | To wear out, decay, come to an end | — (the final yāʾ appears as ى in يَبْلَى) |
| بَلَا / يَبْلُو | To test, try | اِبتِلَاء — trial, test |
From Wearing Out to Testing
What Wearing Reveals
- A garment worn and washed over and over is wearing out — yet as it wears, its stitches and weave become more visible. What was inside comes out.
- A rock worn by weather and water reveals what was inside it.
The Abstract Meaning
The idea of testing grew from this. When a person is tested, what was hidden inside comes out — goodness or badness — it surfaces through اِبتِلَاء. Another instance of Arabic moving from the physical to the abstract.
اِبتِلَاء vs اِمتِحَان
| Word | What is tested | How |
|---|---|---|
| اِمتِحَان | Knowledge | An examination |
| اِبتِلَاء | Character | Allah tests through hardship or ease, wealth or poverty |
Ease Is Also a Test
Wealth, health, and every good thing in life are tests too, and they bring out our inner nature. For some people goodness comes out when they are wealthy; for others, badness.
Examples from the Quran
فَوَسْوَسَ إِلَيْهِ الشَّيْطَانُ قَالَ يَا آدَمُ هَلْ أَدُلُّكَ عَلَىٰ شَجَرَةِ الْخُلْدِ وَمُلْكٍ لَّا يَبْلَىٰ (Ṭāhā 120)
"Then Shayṭān whispered to him; he said: 'O Ādam, shall I direct you to the tree of eternity and a kingdom that will not wear out?'"
- لَا يَبْلَىٰ — a sentence functioning as نَعت for the indefinite مُلْكٍ.
Shayṭān's Strategy
The promise of a kingdom that never wears out targets a desire Allah created in every human being — the longing for permanence, youth, and good times that never end (today a multi-billion-dollar anti-ageing industry). Shayṭān understands our psychology and attacks from our weak points, beginning with something small, not with blatant kufr or shirk.
