حَدَثَ — Event, Newness, and Speech
The root ح-د-ث produces one of the most heavily used words in the Islamic sciences — حَدِيث — and its meaning did not begin with "speech."
The Semantic History
| Stage | Arabic | Sense |
|---|---|---|
| Root verb | حَدَثَ | Something took place — an event, with an element of time in it |
| Adjectival | حَدِيث | New — e.g. مُسْلِمٌ حَدِيثٌ, "a new Muslim" |
| Extended | حَدِيث | The event that took place → the account of it |
| Final | حَدِيث | Any speech, any talk at all |
The Order Matters
The meaning began with event — something that happens in time. Only afterwards did it come to mean the report of an event, and finally speech in general. This ordering is what explains the breadth of the technical term.
The Arabic Definition
مَا يُتَحَدَّثُ بِهِ وَيُنْقَل
"What is spoken about and transmitted."
This is precisely why the term covers so much: the speech of the Prophet ﷺ, his actions, the occasions on which he remained silent, and the things he prohibited — all of it is حَدِيث, because all of it is what was talked about and passed on.
أَحَادِيث — A سَمَاعِي Plural
The plural of حَدِيث is أَحَادِيث.
No Rule Governs It
Normally a given noun pattern takes a predictable broken plural. أَحَادِيث is سَمَاعِي — heard, learned from usage rather than derived by rule. There is no pattern that dictates why حَدِيث should pluralise this way. It is simply what the Arabs said; language evolved organically first, and rules were extracted afterwards. (See the qiyāsī/samāʿī distinction in [[sighat-al-mubalaghah]].)
Examples from the Quran
The Quran uses حَدِيث of itself:
سُورَة المُرْسَلَات — the final āyah
فَبِأَيِّ حَدِيثٍ بَعْدَهُ يُؤْمِنُونَ
"Then in what ḥadīth after this will they believe?"
After this speech, what other speech is going to make them believe? — حَدِيث here is the Quran.
سُورَة الزُّمَر
اللَّهُ نَزَّلَ أَحْسَنَ الْحَدِيثِ
"Allah has revealed the best of speech."
And in Sūrat Yūsuf:
وَيُعَلِّمُكَ مِن تَأْوِيلِ الْأَحَادِيثِ (12:6)
For what تَأْوِيل الأَحَادِيث means here, see [[tawil]].
