Root ج-ه-ل — Three Meanings
The root ج-ه-ل (j-h-l) is richer in Arabic than the Urdu-derived "jahil" (ignorant person, always pejorative) suggests. It carries three distinct meanings.

Quranic Example — Mūsā (AS) in Sūrah Al-Baqarah
When Mūsā (AS) was told by his people that they thought he was "pulling their leg" about slaughtering a cow, he responded:
"I seek refuge in Allah that I should be of the jāhilīn."
Classical tafsīr books cite two valid interpretations of jāhilīn here:
- Ignorant — seeking refuge from claiming Allah said something He did not say (intellectual ignorance that leads to falsehood)
- Hot-headed — seeking refuge from letting righteous anger at their disrespectful response lead him to act rashly (emotional control)
Both meanings are grammatically and contextually sound, illustrating the word's polysemy.
Application in Sūrat Al-Ḥujurāt 49:6
أَن تُصِيبُوا قَومًا بِجَهَالَةٍ "...that you harm some folk out of ignorance/without knowledge"
جَهَالَة here = acting without sufficient information; the ḥāl or circumstantial quality of the action. The harm would not be intentional but the result of failing to verify.
Quranic Example — The Uninformed (Neutral Meaning)
In Sūrah Al-Baqarah (discussing giving charity):
"An uninformed person would think them free of need because of their modesty..."
Here جَاهِل = someone who simply does not know — no moral failing implied, just lack of information.
