تِلَاوة vs قِرَاءة — Recitation with Following vs Plain Reading
Both words are used for reading/reciting the Quran, but they carry fundamentally different meanings.
The Root Meanings

تَلَا يَتلُو has two meanings that are actually one: 1. To recite (the Quran) 2. To follow behind / to come after
These meanings converge: tilāwah = reading that follows — reading in the footsteps of the author, such that you follow every instruction.

Practical Significance
All the ahadīth about the rewards of Quranic recitation use the word تِلَاوة — not قِرَاءة. These rewards are conditional on tilāwah, which is reading with following.
The Prophet ﷺ was asked about Quranic tilāwah and described four elements: 1. Reading the text 2. Pausing at verses of punishment and asking Allāh's forgiveness 3. Pausing at verses of Allāh's blessings and asking for them 4. Acting upon what was read
If only the first element is present, that is qirāʾah — not tilāwah.

تَالٍ (ism fāʿil of تَلَا) = the follower OR the reciter.
In apps and books, السُّورَة التَّالِيَة / الآيَة التَّالِيَة = the following sūrah / āyah (the next one). This is the second meaning of tilāwah in action.
