عُصْبَة — A Band of Strong Men
عُصْبَة denotes a strong band or group — and the word is far more specific than a general "group."
Who It Covers
Men Only, and of a Particular Age
عُصْبَة is used only for men, and specifically for men roughly between 10 and 40 years of age — the young, healthy, physically capable.
Past forty, a man is no longer at that peak of physical labour. And although ten sounds like a child to modern ears, in those times boys of eleven and twelve were already working.
Plural and Pattern
عُصْبَة → عُصَب, on the pattern فُعْلَة → فُعَل:

Examples from the Quran
إِذْ قَالُوا لَيُوسُفُ وَأَخُوهُ أَحَبُّ إِلَىٰ أَبِينَا مِنَّا وَنَحْنُ عُصْبَةٌ (Yūsuf 12:8)
"…while we are a strong band."
The Social Logic Behind the Brothers' Complaint
The word is doing real work in the argument. Grown sons were assets: they could farm, they could shepherd, they multiplied the household's material worth. Young children were, in that reckoning, a liability — to be fed and raised before returning anything.
So the brothers' grievance has an internal logic: we are ten, grown, strong and productive; Yūsuf and his brother are two small children. On a purely material accounting, our father should love us more.
Two qualifications were stressed in class: this materialistic mindset has been present in every age — "we are seeing the height of materialism now" — and it emphatically does not describe Yaʿqūb عليه السلام. It describes the brothers' assumptions, which is exactly what leads them to call him فِي ضَلَالٍ مُبِينٍ (see [[root-dalla]]).
