تَابَ — To Repent; Two Prepositions, Two Meanings
تَابَ / يَتُوبُ (root: ت-و-ب, ajwaf wāwī) = to turn, to return; used specifically for repentance and divine forgiveness.
Two Critical Preposition Usages
| Construction | Direction | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| تَابَ (العَبدُ) إِلَى اللَّهِ | Person → Allah (upward) | The person turns TO Allah in repentance |
| تَابَ اللَّهُ عَلَى عَبدِهِ | Allah → Person (downward) | Allah turns UPON His servant in forgiveness |
Never Swap the Prepositions
- إِلَى (toward) = used when the servant repents — looking UP toward Allah
- عَلَى (upon) = used when Allah forgives — His mercy comes DOWN upon the person
Swapping these is both linguistically incorrect and theologically wrong.
