جَمْع مُنْتَهَى الجُمُوع — The Utmost Plural
Arabic can sometimes form a plural of a plural. But there comes a point beyond which no further plural can be made. That final plural is called جَمْع مُنْتَهَى الجُمُوع — the plural of the utmost plurals.
The Plural of a Plural
Taking بَيْت:
| Word | Note |
|---|---|
| بَيْت | A house — and also a couplet of poetry |
| بُيُوت | Plural |
| أَبْيَات | Also a plural |
An Open Question
Is أَبْيَات the plural of بَيْت in the sense of couplets, while بُيُوت is its plural in the sense of houses? Or is أَبْيَات a جَمْع الجَمْع — a plural of بُيُوت? The teacher was candid that she was unsure and undertook to check. Left as homework from Session 8.
It Is Defined by the Limit, Not by Being a Plural of a Plural
The Crucial Clarification
A student asked whether جَمْع مُنْتَهَى الجُمُوع necessarily means a plural formed from another plural, or simply the limit of pluralisation.
It is the limit. It need not be built on another plural at all.
مَسَاجِد proves the point: it is a plural of مَسْجِد, not of any other plural — yet you cannot form a further plural from مَسَاجِد. It is at the limit, and that is what qualifies it.
Recognising It — the Patterns مَفَاعِل and مَفَاعِيل
You identify a جَمْع مُنْتَهَى الجُمُوع by its pattern: anything on the shape of مَفَاعِل or مَفَاعِيل, or resembling them.
Ibn Mālik's Alfiyyah — the Rule of Prevention
وَكُنْ لِجَمْعٍ مُشْبِهٍ مَفَاعِلَا ⁂ أَوِ المَفَاعِيلَ بِمَنْعٍ كَافِلَا
"And be, for a plural resembling مَفَاعِل or المَفَاعِيل, a guarantor of prevention."
كَافِل — guarantor, custodian, one who takes charge. The line instructs the student: be the enforcer of مَنْع — prevention from tanwīn — for any plural on these patterns.
Poetic Licence
In مَفَاعِلَا the extra أَلِف is not part of the word; it is added for the metre. The actual pattern is مَفَاعِل.
Consequence — Such Plurals Are Diptote
Every جَمْع مُنْتَهَى الجُمُوع is مَمْنُوع مِن الصَّرْف — it takes no tanwīn and is majrūr with a فَتْحَة — unless it is a مُضَاف or carries ال, in which case it takes a kasrah again.
| Example | Pattern | Behaviour |
|---|---|---|
| مَسَاجِد | مَفَاعِل | فِي مَسَاجِدَ — fatḥah, being neither muḍāf nor with ال |
| مَدَارِس | مَفَاعِل | Kasrah when muḍāf — مَدَارِسِ المَدِينَة |
| مَوَاقِع | مَفَاعِل | بِمَوَاقِعِ النُّجُومِ — kasrah, because muḍāf |
فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَاقِعِ النُّجُومِ — "So I swear by the setting places of the stars."
For the full diptote rule and the second Alfiyyah couplet that states these two escapes, see [[mamnu-min-alsarf]].
