اِجْتَبَى — Choosing and Selection
اِجْتَبَى / يَجْتَبِي is a Form VIII verb from the root ج-ب-ي, meaning to choose, to select, to single out. It is the verb Yaʿqūb عليه السلام uses of Allah's selection of Yūsuf عليه السلام.

The Close Relative — اِصْطَفَى
اِصْطَفَى (root ص-ف-و) is also Form VIII and also means to choose. From it comes المُصْطَفَى, the Chosen One — a title of the Prophet ﷺ.
No Two Words Are Perfectly Equal
Saying اِجْتَبَى "has the same meaning as" اِصْطَفَى does not make them 100% identical. In Arabic — as in most languages — no two words are exact equivalents; there are always subtle differences of nuance. For dictionary purposes they may be treated as synonyms, but the difference is real. This is a principle the teacher returns to repeatedly.
Morphology Worth Noting
Both participles illustrate a phonetic pair that is easy to confuse:
- مُجْتَبٍ — the ism fāʿil, an اِسْم مَنقُوص: the final yāʾ is dropped and its tanwīn transfers back onto a kasrah, giving the double kasrah. See [[ism-manqus]].
- مُجْتَبًى / المُجْتَبَى — the ism mafʿūl, an اِسْم مَقصُور ending in أَلِف مَقصُورَة. See [[ism-maqsur]].
The same pairing holds for مُصْطَفٍ / المُصْطَفَى.
Examples from the Quran
وَكَذَٰلِكَ يَجْتَبِيكَ رَبُّكَ — "And thus will your Lord choose you." (Yūsuf 12:6)
Here the grammatical roles are: يَجْتَبِي the verb, رَبُّكَ the فَاعِل (the One who chooses), and كَ the مَفْعُول (the one chosen). Allah is المُجْتَبِي; Yūsuf عليه السلام is المُجْتَبَى.
The context matters: what Yaʿqūb عليه السلام means by كَذَٰلِكَ is "just as Allah chose you for that dream — a dream itself pointing toward a lofty station — so too will He choose you for great matters," i.e. for prophethood. See [[mafool-mutlaq]] for the grammar of كَذَٰلِكَ here.
