آل — Family, Folk, Followers
آل is a noun whose range runs from the narrowest domestic sense outward to a whole community. Which sense is meant is settled entirely by context.
The Range of Meaning
| Sense | Note |
|---|---|
| The people close to a person | The core meaning |
| The immediate family | The most common use |
| Followers / adherents | E.g. of a leader or a teacher |
| A community | The widest sense |
Examples from the Quran
وَيُتِمُّ نِعْمَتَهُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ يَعْقُوبَ — "…and complete His favour upon you and upon the family of Yaʿqūb." (Yūsuf 12:6)
In آلِ يَعْقُوبَ
Here آل does mean the immediate family of Yaʿqūb عليه السلام — but the word also extends downward along the line: to the descendants further on, grandchildren and great-grandchildren included.
Related — أَبَوَيْكَ, the "Two Fathers"
The same āyah continues عَلَىٰ أَبَوَيْكَ مِن قَبْلُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْحَاقَ.
أَبَوَيْكَ is the dual of أَب:
- The independent dual is أَبَوَانِ;
- In the manṣūb/majrūr state it is أَبَوَيْنِ;
- As a مُضَاف (to كَ) the نُون drops → أَبَوَيْ + كَ = أَبَوَيْكَ. See [[mudaf-idafah]].
Not Father and Grandfather
The āyah names them: إِبْرَاهِيم and إِسْحَاق. Relative to Yūsuf عليه السلام these are his grandfather (Isḥāq) and great-grandfather (Ibrāhīm). Arabic uses أَب freely for ancestors up the line, not only for the immediate father.
For the iʿrāb of إِبْرَاهِيمَ as a majrūr بَدَل carrying a fatḥah, see [[mamnu-min-alsarf]] and [[badal]].
